Intro to Backprop

Authors

Hi 👋!

Thanks for visiting Backprop! I started this website because like many others paying attention to the AI/ML space 1, I see a huge need for more AI and ML talent as ChatGPT, Claude, and DALLE are changing how humans are interacting with computers. Near the end of May 2024, I posted this Reddit AMA in the r/LearningMachineLearning subreddit, and over the course of 48 hours it got 500+ upvotes, almost 300 questions & comments, 200,000 views, and 1300 shares! Clearly there was a lot of demand for machine learning career advice, knowledge, and skills.

Lots of Redditors asked for follow up advice on:

  • 💼 understanding the job market
  • 🔬 how to break into an ML career
  • ↔️ how to transition into ML from another field
  • 📋 ML projects to bolster their resumes/CV
  • 🙋‍♂️ ML interview tips
  • 🔬 my daily responsibilities as a machine learning engineer
  • 🧮 calculus, linear algebra, stats & probability, and ML fundamentals
  • 🗺️ an ML study guide and roadmap

My goal with this website is to provide answers to all of this information and more. After all, the website is called Backprop because it pays homage to the backpropagation algorithm (aka backprop) used to train neural networks to learn. Likewise, I hope this website will provide the resources you'll need to learn everything you want about AI/ML, generative AI, neural networks, Transformers, research papers, and more. I'm currently writing a blog post about my journey from a software engineer with zero experience in ML in 2015 to a FAANG machine learning engineer in 2024 (no, I don't have a degree in ML!). In future blog posts, I plan to cover all the material I mentioned above and to experiment with interactive learning modules, which I've been prototyping. Thanks for your support and stay tuned!
